A day in the life of K9 Patrol Dog, Cody

written by: K9 Cody

co-written by: Handler John Kulchar

It is still dark out, but I know I have to rise. It is 3:45 a.m. as my stomach rumbles, knowing I need to eat and digest my food before my training workout for the day so that I don't get bloat which would be dangerous for my health, and keep me from doing my important job.

After a nice meal and some rest, the best part of my day begins. I pant with excitement as I jump into the patrol car with John, my handler and deputy sheriff. Today will likely be another day filled with adventure. John drives and I eagerly peer out the window knowing that more lies ahead as we patrol high drug areas throughout the county. My purpose here with John is narcotics detection. I use my keen sense of smell to sniff out illegal substances, and we work to keep the county, and my handler safe. I have been trained to deter subjects that may flee or attempt to fight my handler. That is my role and I am very serious about my tasks at paw.

Once our day patrolling is complete, my handler always leaves time for fun. We play soccer and decompress to make sure both of our stress levels stay at a healthy level. The most fun part of my week is when John brings me to visit schools to meet with the children and play. We teach them about crime and how we are working to keep them all safe. They pet me, and love me and I can feel that my work here is worthwhile.
